Great Courses and Units for Middle School Social Studies Teachers

Welcome to our most recent blog post featuring great middle school social studies courses and units from members of the BetterLesson community. Enjoy!

5th Grade Social Studies by Randy Friedland.  This course includes the following units: A Nation Divided: The American Civil War, America’s Reconstuction, What it Means to be American: A Look at U.S. Civics, America at the Turn of the Century: Inventors, Immigration, and Indignation, The 20th Century Way: A Study of World War I and the Roaring Twenties, 1929-1945: The Great Depression and World War II, and The Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement.

5th Grade Humanities A: Reading and Social Studies by Adriana Allen. This course includes the following units: Pre-American Revolution – “War Comes to Willy Freeman” by James and Christopher CollierUnderground Railroad, Slavery, and Pre-Civil War Politics – Research Paper, and Civil War and Reconstruction – “The Glory Field” by Walter Dean Myers.

5th Grade Humanities A: Reading and Social Studies by James Larson. This course includes the following units: British Colonization and Native American History – “The Light in the Forest” by Conrad RichterAmerican Revolution – “Johnny Tremain” by Esther Forbes, and Underground Railroad – “Brady” by Jean Fritz

5th Grade Social Studies by Ellie Brown.  This course includes the following units: Geography, Human Beginnings, Early Civilizations, Egypt and Kush, and Non-Fiction Studies.

6th Grade Social Studies: American History Through the Civil War by Marissa Seuc. This course includes the following units: U.S. Geography, Maps, and Early Americans, European Exploration and Slave Trade, Causes of the Revolution, Colonial Religions, Social Hierarchies in the Colonies, The American Revolution, Early America, and The Civil War and Reconstruction.

6th Grade World History by Greg Woodward. This course includes the following units: China, Egypt, Greece, Human Origins, Israel, Mesopotamia, and Rome.

7th Grade World History: Life and Death on Planet Earth by Greg Woodward. This course includes the following units: The Holocaust, The Middle East, Latin America and the Carribean, India, and South Africa.
