Quoth The Teacher! Nevermore!

January 9, 2014

Struggle With the RL. 9-10.4 Standard?. Nevermore.

We are almost completely around the common corner.

That means that teachers will never-more have difficulty finding common core aligned lesson plans and curricula. In this case, if you’re looking for help with the RL. 9-10.4 standard – we’ve got you.

NEA Master Teacher, Chris Arnett, an ELA teacher from Geneva Community High School in Geneva, Illinois, has written a lesson that helps students analyze moods using Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Raven’.

This lesson is strongly aligned to the RL.9-10.4 because it focuses on how Poe’s use of figurative language creates mood in the poem. It also is well-aligned to the RL.9-10.5 standard because it focuses on how Poe’s structure creates a sense of mystery and suspense.

Check out these other lessons from our Master Teachers who will are featured on our site:

  • Cassy McCoy is an ELA Master Teacher out of Rochester, Illinois. She also has a lesson featuring ‘The Raven’. Her lesson helps students identify Gothic themes in present-day media and literature.

  • In Bel Air, Maryland, Master Teacher Paula Stanton teaches the RL.9-10.4 standard with a lesson that has students write commemorative poetry about the events of 9/11.

On January 15th, 2014, BetterLesson launches a new site built entirely for the common core.

You’ll be raven about how many #ccss resources you have at your fingertips.
